Back to Imperial Dam, and the Cloud Museum

While Quartzsite has definitely quieted down to a reasonable level of people and activity, I returned to Imperial Dam this past weekend. It’s a bit quieter here, which I like, plus the weather is getting warm enough for me to go kayaking. I haven’t actually gone out yet, but it’s only a short drive to various bodies of water from here. I’m also pondering heading back to the North Shore where I stayed two years ago, especially if I can find a campsite right on the water. If so, I can leave my kayak inflated, take it out anytime I want, and store it in the trailer at other times so it doesn’t blow away. I’m holding out until March 1, though, so that when I buy the permit I need to camp there, it’ll be valid through the end of next March rather than February, taking me all the way through the end of next season. Melissa has returned from taking care of some business back home in Arkansas, so we’ve been hanging out as well.

One of the neighboring cats came over to visit not long after I arrived. Lister hasn’t exactly made friends with him, but hasn’t beat him up, either.

He also managed to get himself stuck in the fire pit while we were beginning to build it. Silly kitty.

Since I started coming here, I’ve been passing the Cloud Museum on the way to Yuma. We decided to stop in and check it out yesterday while making a grocery run in civilization. It’s this tiny hole-in-the-wall place, and they have so much old stuff, mainly old Fords. They claim to have the world’s largest collection of Model Ts. I’m not sure if that’s true, but they certainly have a lot of them. It’s the personal collection of Johnny Cloud, a long-time resident of Bard, California. He opens it up to the public and charges $10 admission. It’s a pretty good deal for what you get to see here.

Of particular interest to me was this old motorhome based on a Ford Model A. It’s just a truck chassis with a wooden body built on top of it, not much different than today’s motorhomes. I shot video of the whole visit, including a tour of this old motorhome. I’m still putting it together, but I’ll add a link here after I post it.
