Between classes and roundtable discussions, I’m going to be a busy boy at Overland Expo Mountain West this weekend! Here’s where you’ll be able to find me:
Moto-Glamping: Combining Motorcycles and Van Life
Friday, 9:00 am, ADV Skills Area
This is where I’ll basically talk about my life, because this is what I do. I’ll talk about why Moto-Glamping might be an appealing option for some, as well as why it may not be. I’ll go over different ways you can do it, ranging from simple to complex, as well as what I’ve done during my time on the road and what works for me.
Spoiler Alert: My accompanying article on ADVRider will be published Monday, August 29!
Vanlife: More Than Just a Hashtag Q&A
Friday, 2:00 pm, Roundtable Pavilion
“Come learn about what’s behind the hashtag!” That’s literally all I know about this roundtable discussion, because I just found myself added to it. No matter — I know van life, I can talk about it, and I’ll just do what the moderator, Raquel Hernandez-Cruz, asks me to do.
What’s It Really Like To Live Full-Time On the Road?
Friday, 4:00 pm, Bivvy
This is the freeform discussion I accidentally fell into co-presenting at Overland Expo PNW, and what gave me the idea that maybe I should try doing this for real. So here I am! Debbie Lee will join me and help answer everyone’s questions about being a full-time nomad.
Starlink: How Does It Work In the Real World?
Saturday, 2:00 pm, Bivvy
If you’ve read my Starlink articles you probably know most of this. For those who haven’t, I’ll give the detailed scoop on what Starlink satellite internet is, how much it costs, how it works, and how well it really works. I’ll bring my equipment to set up and show off. With any luck, I might even be able to connect to the satellites in class so that everyone can try it out for themselves.
Making It Work: Earning a Living While Overlanding
Sunday, 1:00 pm, Roundtable Pavilion
This is another roundtable discussion I suddenly found myself on. It makes sense — I’ve successfully turned my writing/editing career into something that sustains me on the road, allowing me to live out here full-time. Azure O’Neil, who’s been coordinating all of the presenters behind the scenes, will also moderate this discussion.
I won’t be hiding in my van with Lister outside of these classes and discussions, though. I’ll be out and about, checking out the show just like everyone else, possibly test riding some motorcycles, and maybe even making a purchase or two (no, not motorcycles — not yet, anyway…) If you see me, flag me down and say hello! I’ll have free Smokey Da Van stickers for anyone I run into at the show who wants one. For everyone else, you can get yours here.
